Fieldwork & Clinical Practice

As part of your coursework, you will be required to complete fieldwork in settings that serve children who are at-risk for or who have developmental delays or disabilities. from birth through age 2 and from age 3 through kindergarten. In some instances, your fieldwork will be completed with families instead of directly with children.  Fieldwork requirements are generally 10 hours per course.  If you are working as the teacher of record in an early intervention or early childhood special education classroom, only 2 hours of fieldwork can be completed in the context of your paid position; you must complete the remaining time in a different setting. Proper permission is needed prior to conducting fieldwork. Please check with H.R. in the district or program you plan on conducting your fieldwork regarding the permission process. You can find more information about fieldwork requirements for each special education course in the education specialist program handbook in Appendix E.

To meet the clinical practice requirement, candidates complete a traditional student teaching placement or an intern placement.  You can discuss the different options with your Campus Clinical Coordinator and/or Special Education faculty mentor.
