Clinical Practice Options

Clinical practice typically occurs at the end of your credential program and gives you the opportunity to work in schools for extended periods of time under the guidance of a master teacher or district support provider. Clinical practice is a minimum of two 8-week sessions in length. There are two options for meeting the clinical practice requirement, traditional student teaching or an internship.
- Traditional Student Teaching
For traditional student teaching, your Campus Clinical Coordinator works closely with local school districts to find you an appropriate placement with a master teacher who works with you in their classroom and mentors you as you gradually assume teaching responsibilities. You also receive mentoring and support from a university supervisor who visits you at least 4 times each session. Placements are full-day assignments that occur over two 8 week sessions. For multiple and single subject candidates those placements are at two different grade levels.
- Internships
You may be eligible to teach under a internship through Brandman University if you meet the pre-service requirements and are able to find a job in the credential area you are seeking. Interns must be continuously enrolled in supported teaching and seminar courses throughout their internship. The district that employs you provides you with a district support provider who serves as a mentor. You also receive mentoring and support from a university supervisor who visits you at least 3 times each term.
